John Ronald Reuel Tolkein was one of the original Contemporary British authors. He is most famous for The Lord of the Rings trilogyand The Hobbit. He began his career as a teacher and eventually developed an interest in mythology and writing. According to his own account, one day when he was engaged in the soul-destroying task of marking examination papers, he discovered that one candidate had left one page of an answer-book blank. On this page, moved by who knows what anarchic demon, he wrote "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit". Although Tolkien himself wrote this sentence, he later admitted that he did not have an idea of what a hobbit was. This fact drove him to find out what a hobbit was, what kind of a hole it was living in, and why it was living in a hole. Thus, The Hobbit was published in 1937 and started the trilogy. The Lord of the Rings series was published in three volumes in 1954-1955. The Lord of the Rings was viewed as a culmination of Tolkien's life's work, as he had been working on it for over 15 years prior to submitting it.
